Are you a fan of Kong toys? My dog used to adore them when he was little! He was a bit of a picky eater, and I struggled to train him to eat kibble when he was hungry, so the Kong toy helped a lot!

Now that he’s older, he doesn’t need it for regular feeding, but he still loves it for playtime!

If you’re looking for a way to keep your dog entertained and occupied for a while, you have to try filling a Kong with natural ingredients!

Not only are they great for mental stimulation, but they’re also a really cool way to give your dog some healthy treats and boost their nutrition!

I’ll show you some of the best natural Kong fillers that are easy to prepare and super healthy for dogs!

1 Mashed Bananas

Bananas are not only a great source of minerals, but they’re also really good for dogs with sensitive stomachs!

They’re easy to mash and spread inside the Kong. I usually wash my Kongs with water and a bit of soap, then make sure to rinse them thoroughly with warm water. No matter how yucky it seems at first, I promise you’ll get used to it. Just make sure to wash it regularly.

Mashed bananas are easy to eat, and most dogs love them! They’re an excellent source of potassium and taste really good when slightly frozen, making them a perfect summer treat, too!

2 Plain Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is one of the best natural Kong fillers that’s high in protein and probiotics, making it perfect for gut health! Plus, its creamy texture fills every nook and cranny of the Kong, keeping your dog entertained for longer.

That means it’s going to be a bit tricky to wash, but just use soap and warm water, and you’re good to go. Also, all Kong toys are dishwasher safe, but you have to take them out before the drying cycle (which my washing machine won’t let me). Heat can damage Kongs, so if you can remove them before the next cycle starts, you’re good to go!

When it comes to Greek yogurt, any unsweetened yogurt will work. Don’t give them fruit-flavored ones, and never give them zero-carb ones with fancy flavors.

You can mix Greek yogurt with mashed bananas or add a few blueberries for variety. For an extra refreshing treat, freeze the mixture until it’s soft and slushy, then give it to your dog to help them cool down on a hot day!

3 Peanut Butter (Unsalted, No Xylitol)

Peanut butter is one of the tastiest natural Kong fillers, packed with protein and healthy fats, both of which are important for your dog’s development.

Plus, its rich, sticky texture makes it extra fun (and a bit of a challenge) for dogs to lick out! Just spread a thin layer inside the Kong for a delicious, long-lasting treat.

When choosing peanut butter, keep it simple. Any peanut butter with just a few basic ingredients is a safe choice for your dog! Dogs can safely eat Jif and Skippy, but these brands often have added sugars and oils, which aren’t ideal for your dog’s health.

If you want a healthier option, look for peanut butter made specifically for dogs, like Poochie Butter, which includes extra goodies like flaxseed and oatmeal.

4 Cooked Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a nutritious and easy-to-digest natural Kong filler that’s packed with fiber, vitamins, and natural sweetness. They’re especially great for dogs with sensitive stomachs!

Sweet potatoes are also super easy to prepare! Just boil or bake them, mash them up, and let them cool before filling the Kong. Their soft texture makes them perfect for spreading inside, and most dogs love the naturally sweet taste.

5 Canned Pumpkin (Plain, Unsweetened)

Canned pumpkin is one of the best low-calorie natural Kong fillers for digestion, fiber intake, and gut health. Like babies, dogs are big fans of pumpkin—and they can benefit from it just as much!

Its smooth, creamy texture makes it super easy to spoon into a Kong, and most dogs love the mild, slightly sweet taste. Just make sure you’re using plain, unsweetened canned pumpkin—not pumpkin pie filling, which contains sugar and spices that aren’t safe for dogs.

You can also use canned pumpkin or pumpkin purée to make homemade dog treats! If you mix it with oats and bake them, you’ll get oat cookies that you can break into pieces and stuff inside a Kong for an extra fun and tasty treat.

6 Applesauce (Unsweetened)

Another dog-baby super combo, applesauce is honestly puzzling to me—my dog adores it! It’s naturally sweet, provides vitamins and hydration, and is super easy to fill into a Kong.

I don’t give him too much, though, and honestly, this one might be better suited for a lick mat rather than a Kong. But if you have a larger dog that won’t get diarrhea from a bit of extra applesauce, then you can definitely use it as one of your natural Kong fillers for a fun, tasty treat.

What I really love about applesauce is that it works great frozen! This is something we usually do in the summer when it gets super hot—it keeps my dog cool and entertained at the same time!

7 Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese is a great high-protein option among natural Kong fillers and is also a good source of calcium to support strong bones. Its creamy, soft texture makes it easy for dogs to eat, and most dogs love it!

Just make sure to use plain, low-fat cottage cheese with no added flavors or sweeteners. Simply spoon it into the Kong for a nutritious and satisfying treat.

Want to make it even better? Mix in small pieces of fruit like strawberries or apples!

8 Cooked Chicken or Turkey (Shredded)

Shredded chicken or turkey is a lean, high-protein choice among natural Kong fillers, keeping dogs satisfied and energized. The only problem is that this won’t keep them occupied for long—they’ll probably eat it in a jiffy!

That’s why I recommend mixing it with veggies like mashed sweet potatoes or small chunks of cooked pumpkin to make it last a little longer. You can even add some peanut butter as an extra source of fat.

Just be careful—meat, veggies, and peanut butter add up to a lot of food, so be mindful of their daily calories as they can easily add up.

9 Frozen Broth Cubes

Frozen broth cubes are a refreshing, hydrating Kong filler that’s perfect for hot weather! Not only do they help keep your dog cool, but they also add extra flavor and nutrients (great for joint health!), which makes them both fun and beneficial treats.

You can buy dog-safe bone broth from Amazon or make it at home yourself.

Not sure which bones and meat to use? Here’s my guide on how to make bone broth at home.

To make the frozen bone broth cubes, just use low-sodium chicken or beef broth, pour it into an ice cube tray, and freeze it. Once frozen, pop a cube into the Kong for a cool challenge that keeps your dog entertained!

This is one of my go-to summer treats, especially when my dog needs extra hydration but isn’t drinking enough water. Simple, effective, and dogs love it!
