Can Dogs Eat Pomelo?

Dogs can eat pomelo as it’s not toxic to them! The question is whether they’ll like it or not, but sharing some is absolutely fine! Since the pomelo is so big, it’s best you don’t tease your dog and let them play with it as they can eat some of the rind, which is not safe for dogs. But otherwise, enjoy a little bit of this exciting fruit together!

whole and peeled pomelo fruit and a dog

I love pomelo! I have a whole ritual when my husband and I eat an entire pomelo in one sitting in front of the TV. It takes a while to peel the fruit and remove the white skin from the inside, but it’s so rewarding, refreshing, and super tasty!

For those of you who know, pomelo is a large citrus fruit that tastes like oranges, tangerines, and grapefruit but without the bitterness. It’s really large, honestly, the size of a melon.

To me, it tastes like floral perfume mixed with citruses. It’s amazing. And it’s safe for dogs, while it’s still not a typical dog-friendly fruit. If your dog eats some, it’s totally fine, but should you include pomelo in their diet? There’s no need to.

Is pomelo fruit safe for dogs?

Pomelo is safe for dogs, but since it’s still a citrus, it’s acidic so it can upset your dog’s stomach.

But it’s less acidic than grapefruit.

Besides high acidity, pomelo may not be ideal for dogs since it’s rich in fiber and sugar, a combination that can cause diarrhea in dogs. This is not always the case, so that’s why I say to give them a few pieces to see how they react.

And this is only if they really like pomelo!

Citrus fruits and their acidity

Let’s look at some other citruses that dogs can and cannot eat and compare just how acidic they are.

  • Lemons are highly acidic and not really recommended for dogs. They are not toxic, which is great, but the lemon peel and seeds have a toxin that can be dangerous to dogs. Dogs usually hate lemon, so don’t worry about them eating a ton to reach the toxicity.
  • Limes are also highly acidic and not recommended for dogs. Like lemons, limes are not toxic to dogs, but they can irritate their stomach.
  • Grapefruit is not dangerous to dogs and is less acidic than lemons and limes, but still, dogs shouldn’t eat it as it can upset their stomach. And they probably wouldn’t like it, too.
  • Oranges are safe for dogs, but you should only give them a few pieces here and there. They are less acidic than lemons, but they are still not the best dog fruit out there.
  • Tangerines are sweet, juicy, and the least acidic of all of the fruits on the list. Dogs can eat tangerines, and they can enjoy them in moderation.
